Ingredients:
The star ingredient " D'Italiano Bake at Home Garlic Bread.(Keep frozen until ready to use).
You will need 2 loaves for this recipe.
Homemade Meatballs:
1/2 lb. lean ground beef
1/2 lb. ground pork
1/2 lb. ground veal
1 egg (slightly beaten)
1/2 cup uncooked long grain brown rice
1/2 med. red onion (finely chopped)
3/4 tsp. dried oregano
3/4 tsp. dried thyme
2 large garlic cloves (minced)
1/2 tsp. kosher salt
1/4 tsp. ground black pepper
Homemade Tomato Sauce:
1 Tbsp. olive oil
2 garlic cloves
1 (720 ml) jar strained tomatoes
1 (796 ml)can diced herbed tomatoes
3/4 tsp. dried basil
3/4 tsp. dried thyme
3/4 tsp. dried oregano
salt & pepper to taste
Topping:
1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
Directions:
In a large pot, on medium heat, add oil & garlic. Saute for 1 minute. Add remaining sauce ingredients. Bring to a gentle boil & simmer.
In a large metal bowl, gently mix well all the ingredients to prepare the meatballs. Form meat mixture into 4cm diameter meatballs. Gently place meatballs in sauce. Simmer for 1 1/2 hours.
During the last 20 minutes of the meatballs cooking time, preheat oven to 400F. Follow the directions on the package of the D'Italiano Garlic Bread. Remove bread from oven, keeping it on the cookie sheet,open bread gently as to keep the one side attached. Ensure garlic butter is spread evenly on both sides. Place back in the oven for a couple of minutes as to crisp up the inside. Remove from oven. Cut meatballs in half, line the bottom half of the garlic bread with the meatballs. Cover meatballs with some sauce and mozzarella cheese. Return to the oven for a few minutes to melt the cheese.
